Nursery Mat
Design in Production by 1936
Silk and rayon; dyed
27.5 x 20 inches
Among the Deep Sea Fishers noted in a 1943 issue that this mat was designed by a Labrador woman - note the skin boots which were not worn women in Newfoundland - and reproduced as an engagement calendar. The mat was intended for a child's room, meant to acquaint the child with typical scenes of the northern life. The Nursery design was stock number 23 and sold for a base price of $3.42 for cotton and $2.83 for silk in 1937. This was a favorite pattern and many such mats were hooked. In a variation of the design, the woman wears a flared skirt.
