                                     The Meadow Mat

The design of this exquisite mat is remarkably similar to that of a rug pictured in Hooked Rug Design by William Winthrop Kent, called "Hindu Harmony." However, the inclusion of the flowers indigenous to Labrador and northern Newfoundland places this mat in a class by itself.  Many of the native flowers can be identified: plum boy, bottlebrush, buttercup, blue flag, bakeapple, blueberry, crackerberry, twinflower, squashberry and dandelion. A hooker in Green Island Cove, Newfoundland remembered the name of this pattern as "Meadow Mat." In 1939, this mat was priced at $5.80.
